You know it’s bad when….

The nightly 6pm chat show hosts, complete with shiny sparkly clothing, bright white teeth and big smiles, spend 15 minutes of their precious 60 minute slot on the state of the economy.

Seriously, tonight on the BBC, The One Show, cheerfully told viewers that this economic crisis was the worst crisis ever.  And if it got too bad, apparently, it could end in a pan-European war.  But if that wasn’t depressing enough, or at least a little too far-fetched, don’t get complacent because next year you can expect salary reductions, and if you’re self-employed, you’d better hit the food lines now because your work is likely dry up.   Is it the first of April?  No???  No.  No, it’s not.  It’s the government broadcaster preparing the masses for what they think is coming.  Either that, or someone is being crucified as we speak in BBC HQ for scaring the bejesus out of the entire British adult population – AND – in a slot which is all about making people feel warm and fuzzy – WHAT WERE THEY THINKING????

Well, perhaps we are about to find out.  It is clear that an increasing number of people in this country are doing it incredibly tough.  Unknown territory lies ahead.

It’s not about some people and some jobs and some stories though.  It is something that will in one way or another affect everyone. Those of us who still have jobs may not have them tomorrow so, surely  we can’t simply close our eyes to the plight of others.  Let’s hope that predictions of global conflict are overblown and a distant possibility, but also….don’t we need to think about how can we work on the problem so there isn’t a dreadful inevitability about the ugliest of these possibilities?

Right now my cat is lying on my shoulder looking for a pat.  Time to turn to domestic matters.
